Angry residents of a Grimsby street claim bin men are refusing to empty their overflowing bins - and are blaming their neighbours.People living on Orchard Drive, in Grimsby, claim neighbours – who live outside of their complex – have been arriving at 3am to dump their rubbish in the communal bins that they are not entitled to use.A resident, who wishes to remain anonymous, claims this has been an on-going problem for at least seven years – but nothing has ever been done about it, despite several complaints. The residents claim bin men have been refusing to empty their bins in recent weeks because they are overflowing with rubbish bags.“They’re overflowing because people come out at 3am to dump their rubbish in our bins,” said a resident. “They only use the two closest to the road because it’s easier for them.”“This is the worst it has been but it has been a problem for at least seven years now. We used to have a lock on the cage around the bins – but they just swung the bags over instead.”

The housing complex is owned by Longhurst Group, who recently sent out a letter to all residents about the “unacceptable” pile-up of rubbish. The letter, from Longhurst Group’s Neighbourhood Team, reads: “We have had several reports recently in relation to residents not using the bins correctly.“This is unacceptable and against your tenancy agreement and we would like to think that you would take pride in the area in which you live.“Longhurst Group have previously sent scheme letters and have paid for skips to be on site, and still this continues to happen.“Should we find out the persons responsible, we WILL take tenancy action against you as this is a breach of your tenancy agreement and we will also make the council aware and you may be given a warning or may be fined.“Please cease this activity and use the bins in the correct manner.“We as well as the authorities will be carrying out regular checks on the area.”Resident Kathleen Wilson believes a weekly bin collection, rather than every other week, could solve the issue – and has pitched the idea to North East Lincolnshire Council. She said: “It’s only a problem the council can solve. I don’t blame anybody for why this has happened – but it is a shame. The rubbish blows about down the street as well.”Longhurst Group and North East Lincolnshire Council have been contacted for a comment.
