Proposals for York's tourism industry to receive £100k boost in wake of coronavirus lockdown
There are plans for York to receive a huge boost to help the tourism industry back on its feet following the coronavirus lockdown.
A six-month strategy is being rolled out by City of York Council and Make It York aimed at promoting the strengths of the city and encouraging residents and visitors to enjoy the experiences it has to offer.
An investment of £100,000 has been proposed, designed to boost resident and visitor experience, as well as supporting businesses and attractions in the city. The proposal is set to be discussed on Thursday 23 July.
The tourism marketing strategy is part of the council’s response to support the city recovery from the economic impacts of Covid-19.
Cllr Darryl Smalley, Executive Member for Culture, Leisure & Communities said, “Residents are rightly proud of our city, its beauty and heritage, and I know that in response to the challenges posed by Covid-19 everyone is determined to support our local businesses.
"We want to build on this to attract and inspire people to return to the city through experiences that promote York’s rich and dramatic history.
"York has a long history of reinventing itself – and by working together with one unified approach, we stand our best chance of supporting our local businesses through this difficult time and creating a more prosperous and thriving city."
He added:
The investment will include the curation of a unique programme of events throughout the summer and autumn of 2020. It will also include an advertising drive to promote the city as a safe and welcoming place for residents and visitors to enjoy.
The proposed scheme will launch with a special week of events from 1 August to mark Yorkshire Day and celebrate the commitment of the city’s key workers.
