People asked to 'take a knee' in peaceful doorstep protest

People across the UK are being asked to 'take a knee' in a peaceful Black Lives Matter protest this evening (Monday June 8th).

It follows a weekend of anti-racism rallies to pay tribute to George Floyd, the black American who died when a white police officer knelt on his neck.

People are being asked to wear purple and kneel for eight minutes at their homes at eight o'clock.

The council has again arranged to light up the Civic Hall and other civic buildings in purple 'to show the city's solidarity with the family of George Floyd and with all those who are struggling against racism or any other form of prejudice'.

The first black Lord Mayor of Leeds, Councillor Eileen Taylor, is hoping the peaceful doorstep protest will help unite the country.
