West Yorkshire Police officers face misconduct hearing over Huddersfield toddler death investigation
A gross misconduct hearing has started over claims three West Yorkshire Police officers carried out a substandard investigation into the death of a three-year-old boy in Huddersfield.
Det Chief Insp Mark Swift, Det Insp George Bardell and PC Oliver Scoones could be sacked if it is proved they mishandled the inquiry into the death of RIley Siswick in February 2016.
Riley was found dead at his home two days after being attacked by 27-year-old Kyle Campbell, the partner of Riley's mother, Kayleigh Siswick.
Following his death, Det Chief Insp Swift, Det Insp Bardell and PC Scoones carried out an investigation.
But the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC), which later looked into how the case was handled, said there was evidence they failed to conduct a "thorough or appropriate" inquiry and that they prepared a report for the coroner which was "incomplete or misleading".
Det Insp Bardell and Det Chief Insp Swift also face an allegation that they failed to supervise and direct the investigation appropriately.
Following a second investigation Campbell was found guilty of murder and jailed for at least 20 years. Siswick was jailed for seven years for causing or allowing the death of a child.
