Sheffield runner heads to own back garden to take on London Marathon for charity

Matthew has already helped to raise more than £7,000 for the charity after he lost his cousin to cancer in 2017.

A man from Sheffield is planning to run a marathon in his back garden to raise money for a cancer hospice charity, after the London marathon was cancelled.

Matthew Wainwright, who lives in Worral, had been in training for the annual Marathon that was meant to take place on 26 April, but was postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Rather than let his months of training go to waste, Matthew has decided to run the 26.2-miles around his local area during his hour of daily exercise and the rest in his own home.

He has already reached more than half of his £2,500 fundraising target, which will go towards St Luke’s Hospice in Sheffield.

The hospice helps care for terminal cancer patients and those with neurological conditions in their last moments.

Matthew has already helped to raise more than £7,000 for the South Yorkshire-based charity after he lost his cousin to cancer in 2017. Matthew said:

Matthew will be completing the 26.2 miles tomorrow (May 03), whilst live-streaming his journey on Facebook.
