Heroic Hull trawlermen who died trying to rescue stranded crew to be honoured 65 years on
The family of a trawlerman who was one of 40 people to die while trying to save a stranded vessel 65 years ago say an effort to mark their sacrifice is long overdue.
George Hobson was a 29-year-old radio operator on the Lorella trawler which, alongside the Roderigo trawler, went on an ill-fated rescue mission in a storm off the coast of Iceland in January 1955. The stranded boat managed to escape but all those on board the Hull trawlers were killed.
The Hull Bullnose Heritage Group, which works to preserve the memory of the city's fishing industry, has long been campaigning for the mens' bravery to be recognised.
On Sunday, on the 65th anniversary of the tragedy, two plaques commemorating both crews' actions will be unveiled outside Elliott Chappell Health Centre on Hessle Road at 10am.
The event will take place before the annual Lost Trawlermans' Day Service, which will begin at St John the Baptist Church at 12noon.
