Yorkshire Bank customers express anger at payment errors

Hundreds of people have been left without wages and unable to pay their bills after Yorkshire Bank suffered a computer system error today.

Affected customers have taken to social media to express their frustrations.

The glitch comes just three months after the bank announced it was closing its Leeds headquarters as part of a major restructuring programme, with the possible loss of hundreds of jobs.

The bank will be rebranded following the Clydesdale and Yorkshire Bank group's merger with Virgin Money.

It says it is investigating reports as a priority and will provide an update for customers as soon as possible.

Consumer expert Jenny Ross who is the Which? Money Editor says these technical failures are common which is not acceptable and has given the following advice.

  • Be wary of unsolicited contact claiming to be from your bank - scammers are likely to take advantage of this IT glitch to try and exploit customers. If you’re not sure if a message or call is legitimate, contact your bank through the number on their website, or on the back of your payment card.

  • Keep a note of any expenses incurred as a result of the system failure, as the bank has communicated it will ensure customers are not left out of pocket.
