Motorists have been warned to expect delays on the M62 westbound after a section of the carriageway at Lofthouse was closed for essential maintenance work to a railway bridge.

The 50 year old Ardsley bridge carries around 66,000 vehicles a day over the East Coast Mainline Railway. The work needs to be done to stop further damage to the concrete base of the bridge. The work was originally planned to take place early this year but was postponed.

The east bound carriageway was repaired in the 1990's.

The section of motorway, between J29 M1 J42 (Lofthouse) and J28 A653 Dewsbury Road (Tingley), will remain closed until 5am on Monday September 9. Diversions have been put in place.
