Kashmir issue highlighted at public meeting in Leeds
More than 200 people including MPs and councillors have attended a public meeting about the issue of Kashmir at Leeds Civic Hall.
It comes after India scrapped an article in its constitution which gives India-administered Kashmir special status.
Since the move, earlier this week, the region has been on lockdown with an increased military presence and all communication channels, including the internet cut off.
The decision to scrap the article also threatens peace between South Asian neighbours India and Pakistan, who have been at odds over the control of Kashmir for 70 years.
At the the Council Chamber at Leeds Civic Hall today, members of the Kashmiri community in the city called on the UK government to intervene and lobby its Indian counterparts to end the restrictions in Kashmir.
Tahir Masudi, a surgeon based in Leeds recently returned from Srinagar where his family lives. He spoke to ITV Calendar about saying bye to his family, and his concerns about being unable speak to them.
Cllr Mohammed Iqbal organised the meeting and said the lockdown in Kashmir is "against humanity".
