Mother of boy, 6, shot dead in Hull by his great-grandfather aims for change in the law
The mother of a six-year-old boy from Hull, who died after his own great-grandfather shot him with an air rifle, is calling for a change in the law to prevent more tragedies.
Stanley Metcalf was shot in the abdomen by Albert Grannon in Sproatley last July. He is due to be sentenced next week for manslaughter and a firearms offence.
Speaking for the first time about the tragedy, his mother Jenny Dees told ITV Calendar about the impact the incident has had and the family's desire to prevent it happening to anyone else.
Stanley was one of four children and has a twin sister called Elsie. His family described him as someone who was "was always smiling, always laughing, he had loads of friends, and he was a fantastic footballer".
The family has now launched a campaign for Stanley's Law, calling for more regulation over the sale and use of air powered weapons.
At present many air weapons can be bought without the need for a licence by over 18s, while many can be used legally by over 14s.
A petition set up by Stanley's family calling for stricter regulations and more education about the dangers of using such weapons has already been signed by more than 5,000 people.
A series of fundraising events have been organised in Stanley's memory.
Stanley's Great Big Kick About, which will be a netball and football tournament, will take place at St Mary Queen of Martyr's School in Hull on July 7.
The school is also creating a special memory garden thanks to support from donors and the Hull charity theRICH Foundation, which supports bereaved families.
