Footage has emerged of a prison inmate's eight-hour rampage at HMP Full Sutton near York - which was only stopped when a hundred riot police were mobilised.

John Onyemaechi, who was serving a double life sentence for offences including attempted murder, attacked staff with a cooking pan.

He also started a fire in a kitchen which caused £15,000 worth of damage last August.

Prison officers threw "pyrotechnics" and used PAVA spray to distract the convict as they attempted to bring him under control in an eight-hour riot.

At a hearing at Hull Crown Court a further 6 years and 9 months was added to his jail term after he admitted assault, arson and making threats to kill.

He had been jailed at the Old Bailey in 2011 for a minimum of 25 years for two offences of attempted murder, attempting to wound to resist lawful apprehension, robbery, and wounding with intent to do grievous bodily harm.

Judge David Tremberg told him: 'You are clearly a powerful man, you went on the rampage and you cared little for your own safety, let alone that of others.'
