Watchdog rejects North Yorkshire council tax rise for police services

Julia Mulligan

A watchdog has rejected a 10 per cent increase to the police precept, due to a "lack of assurance" about how the extra money would be spent.

The North Yorkshire Police, Fire and Crime Panel vetoed an increase in the council tax supplement, which had been forward by the Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner, Julia Mulligan.

She told the council last week that such a rise was necessary because of the "increased demands" on emergency services.

But today the panel decided that it needed more detail to arrive at a balanced decision.

However, the panel did give its approval to an increase for 2019/20 for the fire and rescue service, of £2.07 (2.99%) for a Band D property.
