During the conflict Grimsby and its surrounding coastline lost thousands of fishermen and 350 ships.
Day after day, many sailed in treacherous conditions in their converted trawlers, to take on vital but dangerous minesweeping and patrol missions, so freeing up our Royal Navy warships for battle.
Other seamen helped the war effort by fishing the dangerous waters to help feed the nation – despite being targets themselves.
