Hull city councillor jailed for making 'grotesque' indecent images of children

A serving Hull City councillor has been jailed for 12 months for making indecent images of children - described in court as grotesque.

Steven Bayes was one of the city's most recognisable public figures. He was one of the main driving forces behind Hull's bid to become UK City of Culture.

But away from his public persona he had a secret double life online. He had a Twitter account in the name Lord of Darkness and he was found guilty earlier this year of making indecent photographs, downloading indecent images of children, some as young as seven and having "extreme" pornography.

Giving him a 12 month prison sentence the judge told Steven Bayes, 'You are still in denial. Your reputation lies in tatters'. For the next 10 years he will be on the sex offenders' register and be banned from using any computer that hides his online activity.

Humberside Police said they welcomed the prison sentence which they said reflected the 'seriousness and gravity' of Stephen Bayes' offences and that they hoped it sent a firm and robust message that they will investigate such crimes thoroughly.

Hull City Council has made no official comment but council leader Steven Brady has issued a statement on behalf of the Labour group saying: "I am appalled at these offences which fuel the abuse and victimisation of young people. I condemn Steven Bayes for the actions which resulted in his conviction and sentencing today."

Stephen Bayes' sentence means he's automatically struck off as a councillor - a role he would have only had for three more days after not standing in the local elections. His reputation now permanently tarnished.
