Building work has started on a new £57million Leeds City College campus that councillors believe is the "missing piece of the jigsaw" for the city's so-called cultural quarter.

Councillors and college bosses were on site earlier to mark the milestone after contractors cleared land next to the West Yorkshire Playhouse in Quarry Hill.

The new hub for digital and creative arts and health and social sciences will take two years to build and is expected to open for the 2019/2020 academic year.

The development has been part-funded by a £33.4m grant from the Leeds City Region Enterprise Partnership.
