A gymnast from Yorkshire is about to wow audiences in the region and around the country in a spectacular stage show.

Emily McCarthy won her place in the world-renowned Cirque du Soleil nearly five years ago - and now she's finally going to have the chance to perform in her home county.

Emily is one of the 'Slippery Surface Flyers' in the production of Varekai. She began learning her art in Leeds, before moving to Wakefield Gymnastics Club at the age of 12.

Emily recalls the moment she told her parents she was going to run away to the circus. Her dad became emotional she was leaving at such a young age, but her family were incredibly proud, excited and supportive of her dream.

After being welcomed into the Cirque Du Soleil family, Emily moved to Montreal for a month of training, before starting a 3-month big top show. With Varekai now on a world tour, visiting a new city every week, the toughest thing for Emily is living out of a suitcase and having to pack clothes for different seasons.
