The widower of Jo Cox said his family would not "respond to hatred with hatred" after her killer was jailed for life.

Brendan Cox spoke alongside Mrs Cox's sister, Jo Leadbeater, outside the Old Bailey after Thomas Mair was given a whole life sentence.

He said that his life and the lives of his two children "collapsed" after her death on June 16.

But he added: "We try now not to focus on how unlucky we were to have her taken from us, but how lucky we were to have her in our lives for so long."

Mr Cox said the reaction to the incident had shown "Britain at its best: compassionate, courageous and kind" and called on the country to learn from his wife's example.

He said he hoped that those "who seek to divide us will face an unassailable wall of British tolerance and the articulation of Jo's beliefs that we hold more in common than that which divides us".

Ms Leadbeater echoed Mr Cox's sentiments, saying it had been "a very difficult few months" and thanking emergency services, witnesses and lawyers.

She said: "There may have been one act of extreme cowardice on that day, but there were many acts of bravery."

Ms Leadbeater said the family were "stronger and more united than ever" and that they would respond with "strength, love, positivity and enthusiasm".
