Lincolnshire Police have started digging in a field in East Heckington after new information about a man who went missing 20 years ago.
Michael Hewerdine was last seen at his home in Ruskington on 21 November 1996.
An investigation has been underway since this date, which police are now dealing with as murder.
They now believe that Mr Hewerdine's remains could possibly be buried in East Heckington.
They started an excavation in a field of an address on the A17 at East Heckington, between Swineshead Bridge and Sleaford this morning.
