Freedom Festival organisers seek help building cardboard tower
Organisers of Hull's Freedom Festival are looking for thousands of volunteers to help build a 10 metre cardboard tower.
The People's Tower will be assembled using only human power and cardboard boxes before it is demolished again in mass celebration.
The concept of the structure has been taken around the word by its creator, French artist Olivier Grossetête, appearing at locations including Glastonbury Festival, Sydney Festival and Marseilles European Capital of Culture 2013. It will now be built in Hull, as part of the city’s Freedom Festival.
The giant structure will be erected in Queens Gardens with the help of thousands of people of all ages, before the building is brought down again as part of celebrations on the final day of the festival.
The build of the tower will happen in stages, with workshops held at Hull School of Art and Design until Friday 2 September, where participants will help produce the ‘bricks’ to be used in the structure.
Then, on the Saturday, the Tower will begin to be built on site in Queens Gardens.
The final stage of the concept – which includes the ‘topple’ of the tower - will take place on Sunday 4th September.
