Mansfield council to ban spitting in public

Mansfield District Council have voted in favour of introducing new legislation which will give more powers to tackle nuisance behaviour such as spitting.

The public spaces protection order (PSPO) legislation for Mansfield comes into force today and means that smoking in children's play areas and the supply of legal highs will also be banned.

The order put forward by the authority also means that dogs owners will have to keep their pets on a lead and cycling will be banned in pedestrianised areas of the town.

Councillors unanimously voted in favor of introducing the legislation at a meeting last night.

The PSPO replaces the old designated public place orders, it will supersede existing orders, including dog control, gating and dispersal orders.

The council has already costed signs for a number of problem areas, with the bill set to run to more than £3,900.
