New Chief Constable to take command early

It's been announced that the next South Yorkshire Police Chief Constable will take up his role earlier than expected in a bid to restore public confidence in the force.

Stephen Watson, who is currently the Deputy Chief Constable in the Durham Constabulary, was expected to take up the role from November, but an agreement has been made allowing him to fill the post from Monday.

Police and Crime Commissioner Dr Alan Billings says restoring trust in South Yorkshire Police will be high on the new Chief's agenda.
