Retired South Yorkshire police officer disputes Hillsborough verdicts

A former senior policeman who was on duty at Hillsborough has told Calendar he doesn't accept this week's inquest findings that 96 Liverpool fans were unlawfully killed.

The jury reached their conclusions after sitting for almost two years, and after hearing evidence from hundreds of witnesses, they concluded that Liverpool supporters played no part in causing the disaster.

But former Chief Inspector David Sumner - now a representative of the National Association of Retired Police Officers (NARPO) - says the behaviour of fans drinking and arriving late at the ground did contribute to what happened.

His claims were immediately rejected by one Hillsborough survivor and condemned by a Sheffield MP.

Meanwhile solicitors representing some of the bereaved want the Home Secretary to send in a special team to examine South Yorkshire Police.
