Hostage pictured with EgyptAir hijacker is Leeds Health and Safety inspector

A man appeared in a picture with the EgyptAir hijacker while being held hostage is believed to be a 26-year-old Brit from Leeds.

Benjamin Innes is said to have posed for the photo with Seif Eldin Mustafa, who is accused of hijacking flight MS181.

Wearing a suicide vest, which turned out to be fake, the hijacker took several hostages after forcing the Cairo-bound plane to land in Cyprus.

Friends of Mr Innes told MailOnline he sent them the picture, first described as a selfie, despite the danger he might have been in.

Chris Tundogan told the website: "I have no idea why he took it, but he's not afraid to shy away from anything.

"I find it pretty mental, but that's just Ben I guess!"

Mr Innes mother Pauline said she just wanted her son home safe and well.

She said: "All we can say is that the picture is clearly not a selfie as everyone has been describing it.

"You can clearly see that it is not Ben who is taking the picture. He's in it but he's not taking it.

"But we don't want to speak about anything until he's back home."
