Graham Alexander returns to Scunthorpe as new manager

Scunthorpe United have appointed Graham Alexander as first team manager.

The 44-year-old signs a three-and-a-half year contract and will take charge for the first time at Barnsley on Good Friday.

He will be assisted by current assistant manager Nick Daws and first team coach Andy Dawson.

The appointment sees Alexander return to Glanford Park, where he began his playing career.

He made his debut in April 1991 after coming through our youth ranks. He made 159 league appearances for United, scoring 18 goals.

Similarly successful spells at Luton Town, Preston North End and Burnley followed for the full- back/midfielder, while Alexander also picked up 40 caps playing internationally for Scotland.

In April 2011, Alexander made his 1,000th senior appearance for club and country. Only fellow ex-Iron Tony Ford has matched this feat as an outfield player.

After a spell coaching at Preston, he began his managerial career with Fleetwood Town in December 2012, where he spent almost three years, and guided them to promotion via the League Two play- offs in May 2014.
