Mobile phone driver jailed for causing death by dangerous driving

A man who used his phone for a 'prolonged period of time' whilst driving has been jailed after causing an accident on the A1 in Newark, killing one person and causing damage to six other cars.

Robert Munce, who is 47, and from Dunster Walk in Immingham, South Humberside, pleaded guilty to death by dangerous driving and was sentenced to four years and three months imprisonment at Nottingham Crown Court.

The court heard how Munce was driving southbound on the A1 near Newark in November 2014 and failed to see that traffic in the nearside lane was slowing down.

Munce collided with a Ford at approximately 60mph, killing a passenger in the car, Margaret Nile. This collision directly led to a series of other collisions which closed the road for several hours.

The judge also said in court that he was completely satisfied that the collision happened due to Munce using his phone for a prolonged period of time whilst driving.

After being voluntary interviewed twice, officers charged Munce with death by dangerous driving. He pleaded guilty and was sentenced today at Nottingham Crown Court. He was also banned from driving for seven years.
