Tadcaster Bridge collapse a 'huge complication' to recovery
The MP for Selby and Ainsty has described the Tadcaster Bridge collapse as a 'huge complication' to the recovery and clear-up in the aftermath of the floods.
Nigel Adams said that the damaged bridge will have 'knock-on' effects on families and businesses, as the community is divided.
Mr Adams was speaking to ITV Calendar just hours after he had walked on the closed bridge to show the damage to Floods Minister Rory Stewart.
Mr Adams, a Conservative MP, said he is 'confident' that the Tadcaster Bridge will be repaired as soon as possible.
He said he has already spoken to the Minister and will be liaising with North Yorkshire County Council to ensure the work gets done as soon as practicably possible.
Residents in the area are currently being evacuated due to fears of a gas leak.
It is understood that this is a rupture rather than a severe gas leak, with engineers working to cap it off so people can return to their homes.
The Environment Agency has issued a Severe Flood Warning in the aftermath of the collapse.
