Thirty years have passed since horrifying pictures of under nourished children in Romanian orphanages were beamed around the world.

It began a global outcry about the squalid conditions children were living in, but also sparked a massive charity campaign in the UK, which is still going on in our region today.

The Samaritans Purse now runs the project which sees tens of thousands of shoeboxes being sent around the world.

Every year hundreds of volunteers in Holmfirth spend weeks collecting toys and books for children to open at Christmas. Over the years they have sent more than one hundred thousand shoe boxes to orphanages in Romania and other countries where childrens' lives are blighted by conflict and poverty.

This year, as has happened for the last four, thousands of boxes from warehouses across the UK will go to Syrian refugees.

Among the volunteers is 88-year old Eric, who spends up to ten hours a day packing shoeboxes.
