Work begins to tear down former Barnsley central offices

Part of Barnsley's skyline for almost 40 years changed today with the demolition of the town's former central offices.

The demolition marks phase one of Councils new project called "Better Barnsley".

The multi-phase project which should be finished by 2019 is estimated to cost 100 million pounds, half of that money will come from the council.

The work couldn't come soon enough for some onlookers, including Brian Linskey, a construction worker who helped build the original building.

Residents will have to wait eight weeks until the site is fully flattened, then work to build phase two, a temporary market space, can begin.
