No room for standing: Featherstone Rovers christen 'new' old stands

It looks like any normal sporting venue, but the railway end stands at Featherstone Rovers Big Fella's stadium have gone through quite the transformation in recent months.

In 2011, Scarborough Council voted to demolish the town's McCain Stadium, which had been derelict since the Scarborough F.C. was wound up four years earlier.

The Kingstone Press Championship club then agreed to buy two of the stands and carry out demolition as part of the deal.

Featherstone's Chief Executive says it will add to the fans' experience:

Volunteers and Rovers fans worked for two years to help improve the stadium which has seen its capacity increased from 6,700 to 8,000, which received approval from to open to fans in the week leading up to the game.

The club's coach, Andy Hay, says that now, spurred on by their 'new' stadium, their ambition is promotion to the Super League:

On the pitch however, that dream looked further away than they hoped as Rovers christened their new stands with a heavy, 40-4 defeat to Bradford.

But a 22-year high league attendance was a silver lining for the club, and was only their first defeat of the season.

The newly imported stands

Rovers fans will now be hoping the club can match their of-field ambitions on the pitch, starting by backing their team out of the Championship and into the Super League.
