'I wanted to forget that day.' Norman Hunter relives 1973 final heartbreak

One of the standout ties of this weekend's FA Cup Third Round sees Leeds travel to Sunderland in a repeat of the 1973 final.

Back then Leeds were the dominant force in English football and holders of the Cup. So when they took on second division Sunderland the Whites were overwhelming favourites.

However, the Weirsiders upset the form book claiming a 1-0 win.

Norman Hunter was in that Leeds team and said they deserved to lose that game: "Sunderland deserved to beat us in the end. They were the better team over the 90 minutes. I wanted to forget it, I remember waking up the next day thinking, 'Have I dreamt that, that they've beaten us?'. Sunderland played extremely well, and we weren't as good as we normally were."

Hunter praised the current manager Neil Redfearn saying: "I think he's doing a very, very good job. One of the most satisfying things for me is that he's got himself an assistant in Thompson. Somebody that he knows, somebody that he trusts, that he works with, that is a good thing."

He spoke to John Shires about the 1973 final, Leeds' chances this weekend and about the club under Massimo Cellino and Neil Redfearn:
