Nick Clegg has said it would be 'wrong' for Sheffield City Council to close Don Valley Stadium.

The deputy prime minister is urging the Labour-run council to re-think the proposal to close the venue which has been a training base of sports stars like Olympic champion, Jessica Ennis.

Currently, the council subsidises the Stadium as it doesn’t make enough revenue.

The Stadium was part of the World Student Games facilities, built by the Labour council in the 1990s. Local taxpayers are still paying more than £20m a year as part of the World Student Games facilities debt.
