Woman forced to give birth in car park

Ania Martin with her daughter

A mother from Leeds has told how she was forced to give birth in a car park after being told there was a staff shortage.

Ania Martin, who lives in Pudsey, went to Leeds General Infirmary to have her daughter. But when she arrived, she was told there was not enough staff to help her - and was advised to go to another hospital nearby.

However there was no time, and Ania ended up giving birth to her baby in the hospital car park.

She said: "It was the most horrible thing ever. I thought at the time I would rather be dead.

"It made me very angry I had to go through that in a car park."

A report is due out later today which claims there is a chronic lack of midwives across the country.
