Heroes welcome for Yorkshire Regiment

Soldiers from the Yorkshire Regiment will mark their homecoming from operations in Afghanistan with a series of parades.

The soldiers of the 1st Battalion The Yorkshire Regiment will march at the Great Yorkshire Show in Harrogate, Beverley, Bridlington, Bradford, Leeds, York and Hull, - all towns and cities in which they hold the Freedom to march with bands playing, bayonets fixed and colours flying.

The majority of the soldiers have family in Yorkshire and have recently returned to their base in Germany after a six-month operational tour in Afghanistan.

The 120 soldiers will march through the streets of the Yorkshire towns to the music of the Band of the King's Division.

The Battalion started with a parade on the first day of The Great Yorkshire Show. They marched into the Main Arena halt in front of the President's Box before observing a minute's silence to commemorate their fallen comrades.

The Beverley parade - 11.00 am on Wednesday 11 July

The soldiers march from Burton Road,, Molecroft Road, New Walk, North Bar Without. Upon reaching the Bar, the parade commander requests entry by banging on the gate. When the gates are opened the parade will continue onto North Bar Within, Lairgate, Saturday Market, Toll Gavel, Butcher Row, Wednesday Market, Lord Roberts Road, Champney Road. The salute will be taken at close to the Market Cross.

The Bridlington parade - 3.00 pm on Wednesday 11 July

The soldiers will march onto the Promenade, left into Clifford Street, Garrison Street, Prince Street, Queen Street, Bridge Street, South Cliff Road to the dais near the Spa building. Following an inspection and presentation the parade will march off via South Marine Drive.

The Bradford parade - 11.30 am on Thursday 12 July

The soldiers will march from Nelson Street, Hall Ings, Bridge Street, Sunbridge Road, Kirkgate, Cheapside, Market Street, Bridge Street, Centenary Square where there will be an inspection and presentation before the troops fall out.

The Leeds parade - 2.30 pm on Thursday 12 July

The soldiers will march from the Civic Hall, via Portland Street, Millennium Square, Great George Street, Cookridge Street, Headrow, Vicar Lane, King Edward Street, Briggate, Calverley Street, to Millennium Square. The salute will be taken on the steps of the Civic Hall.

The York parade - 11.45 am on Friday 13 July

The soldiers will attend a Thanksgiving service in York Minster at 10.30 am. Following this they will march down Blake Street, Davygate, Parliament Street, High Ousegate, Spurriergate, Coney Street past the Mansion House , St Helen's Square, Blake Street and Duncombe Place. The salute will be taken at the Mansion House.

The Hull parade - 12 noon - Saturday 14 July

The soldiers will march from Londesborough Street, via Park Street, Spring Bank, Ferensway, Prospect Street, King Edward Street, Jameson Street, Queen's Dock Avenue, Alfred Gelder Street, Wilbeforce Drive and ends at the Guildhall, Hanover Square. The salute will be taken at the dais next to the Amy Johnson statue.
