Supersize incinerators at York Crematorium
York Crematorium starts work today to build new bigger incinerators at a cost of £1.7 million, to deal with the worsening obesity crisis.
York Council will carry out a six month programme of work to the city's main crematorium to introduce two new cremators - one large and one standard size - to replace the existing three incinerators.
It's reported there have been some occasions where the council has had to turn down requests for cremations because the deceased was too large for the current incinerators.
A heat recovery system will also be introduced as part of the renovations, to reuse warm gases emitted from the chimney during the cremation process. They will then generate heat to be used in the chapels and neighbouring buildings.
