Injuries to cyclists
A campaign has started in Leeds to stop cyclists dying in the city. In the last year 255 cyclists were injured on the roads. 45 of them were seriously injured and one person was killed. This means cyclists make up 9% of the overall casualty total - an increase from 7% in 2008.
Now, cyclists are being invited to see the road from a truck driver's point of view. It is so that they can understand why drivers sometimes do not see them approaching.
Four out of five collisions happen on weekdays during morning and evening commutes. The road with the highest casualty rate in the city is the A660, with the most common cause being where a driver signals to allow another to turn right in front of them into a side road. The turn vehicle then collides with a cyclist, who is travelling up the inside of the traffic.
