Church roofs get alarms

One of the churches in north Yorkshire to get an alarm

Churches across North and West Yorkshire are at the forefront of a campaign to stop criminals from stealing lead from Britain's church roofs.

Last year was the worst on record for lead and copper being stolen from roofs and inside church premises.

St Wilfrid's Church in Leeds has been targeted several times - thieves have stolen the church bell, metal from the front of the vicarage and copper piping from the Church.

Several churches in the diocese have had roof alarms fitted to some of the most at-risk churches in the area by church and heritage insurer Ecclesiastical.
