A HUGE inferno has destroyed Sheffield Ski Village’s main buildings.

Firefighters were called to the centre at Neepsend at about 1am today when the wooden chalet-style accommodation was well-alight.

At the height of the blaze, around 30 fire fighters fought the flames using six fire engines and an aerial ladder.

Nobody was inside the building when the fire broke out.

Efforts to tackle the fire were hampered by the presence of acetylene cylinders which meant a 200 metre cordon had to be set up around the site but no homes are within the affected area.

Fire service Incident Commander, Stewart Nicholson, said: “We were pumping around 3,000 litres of water per minute onto the fire from the River Don.”

The fire crews involved in the incident were from Central, Rivelin, Darnall, Elm Lane, Tankersley and Lowedges. The cause of the fire will be subject of an investigation by police and the fire service.
