It has only been cancelled in the past during the first and second world wars. It's one of the few events in the Lake District where people can take part in traditional games including Cumberland Wrestling, Fell Running and Hound Trails.

I've been talking to some people today, who are here for the first time, and the first thing they have said after being here for half an hour is 'it's great, there's still this family atmosphere with the children enjoying themselves'.

Does it keep people away? Yes, unfortunately. We haven't got the bigger crowds that we normally expect at this time of day but what the day is all about, the family feeling, it is there.
