Five parks in the region have been given Green Flag Awards by the environmental group Keep Britain Tidy.

Chances Park in Carlisle, Dock Park in Dumfries and the cemeteries at Alston and Penrith have all been recognised, with Siloth Green in Cumbria being listed as one of the best in the world.

The parks are among 1,797 others in the UK to receive the award. The Green Flag Award is an international award given to parks and green spaces for being safe, clean and green places for people to enjoy.

We are delighted to be celebrating another record-breaking year for the Green Flag Award scheme. Each flag is a celebration of the thousands of staff and volunteers who work tirelessly to maintain the high standards demanded by the Green Flag Award. The success of the scheme, especially in these challenging times, demonstrates just how much parks matter to people.

– Paul Todd, International Green Flag Award scheme manager

Awards are given to green spaces open to the public on an annual basis with winners applying each year to renew their Green Flag status.
