Communities should take more responsibility for flood protection, says insurance giant

People in Cumbria need to take more responsibility for protecting their communities against flooding - and shouldn't rely solely on the government.

That's the finding of a new report from insurance giant Zurich.

Thousands of homes in Cumbria had to be evacuated following Storm Desmond last year - with many home owners still waiting to return to their properties.

Zurich say that no amount of government flood protection schemes can completely remove the risk of flooding - and that communities need to take their own precautions.
