New ministerial role for MP Rory Stewart

MP Rory Stewart moved to International Development Credit: Rory Stewart

One of our region's MPs has been given a new role in Theresa May's Government.

Rory Stewart, MP for Penrith and the Borders, has been given the job as Minister of State at the Department for International Development.

Until yesterday, he was the Minister at the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (Defra), where he was floods minister.

He played a prominent part in dealing with the aftermath of the storms in December, which caused widespread devastation in the Border region.

The new floods minister is Therese Coffey, MP for Suffolk Coastal.

"I've been replaced by Therese Coffey, a very strong and experienced MP who will be a very good floods minister and is absolutely committed to continuing our work."
