An 18-year-old man has received a five year custodial sentence for an armed robbery at a post office in Frizington.

Paul Farish, from Whitehaven, was sentenced at Carlisle Crown Court today.

He pleaded guilty to robbery involving a firearm on the 9th December 2015.

The armed robbery occurred at the post office on Main Street, Frizington on Wednesday 28th October 2015.

Police were called at 6.17am on Wednesday morning to reports of a member of staff being threatened with a firearm at the Post Office on Main Street.

Farish marched the victim around the shop to the till holding the firearm against her.

He then made off with a small amount of cash.

The female shop assistant was not hurt but was obviously left very distressed.

Detective Constable Richard Melton said:

This male subjected the store assistant to a horrendous ordeal by threating her with a firearm. Thankfully nobody was physically injured, however this does not reduce the severity of such an offence as this incident caused great distress to the victim, who feared for her life. As a direct result of this incident the victim has suffered a great deal of mental trauma.

I would like to express my thanks to the victim for her resilience and assistance in our investigation. I would also like to commend the local community for their support which enabled us to trace who was responsible.

– Detective Constable Richard Melton
