Unions pleased by MOD Longtown decision

Councillors have been meeting with Defence Minister Philip Dunne at the Longtown MOD site to discuss its future.

Despite 53 jobs at the site going, union members say they are pleased by the decision.

"We are obviously pleased that the decision has been made and that Min (DEST) has recognised the importance of the Longtown site in fulfilling Defence Munitions commitment to the front line. However, we are deeply saddened by the loss of 53 jobs. Over the next few months we will begin to hold a series of meetings with the official side aimed at reducing the amount of job losses. We will also work closely with the MOD outplacement scheme and local agencies to find alternative work and re-skill staff who will be identified as surplus."
