"Black Eye Friday" fills Cumbria's police cells

Police in Cumbria say there were around 60 incidents of anti-social behaviour last night (December 21st) which at one point meant all the cells in the county were full.

The new police and crime commissioner Richard Rhodes said that the incidences of disorder were higher than normal.

Four police officers suffered minor injuries after being assaulted but continued with duties last night.

In the Scottish Borders six people were arrested in separate incidents including breach of the peace, assaulting a police officer and possession of illegal drugs.

Police in Dumfries and Galloway said that though Dumfries was busy they had no reported additional incidents of trouble.

Police have identified so-called "Black Eye Friday" because it is traditionally the last Friday before Christmas when many offices and factories close for the festive period.
