Heavy rain and thunder sweeps through Cumbria and south of Scotland

People in Eastriggs say yesterday's hail storm has caused tens of thousands of pounds worth of damage to cars and caravans.

This footage shows just how powerful the storm was.

Just hours after we enjoyed the hottest day of the year, thunder storms and heavy rain swept through Cumbria and southern Scotland.

A Met Office yellow weather warning is still in place and emergency services remain on standby.

During a stormy morning ITV Border's cameras captured this time lapse footage of dark clouds massing over Carlisle, and breaking into heavy rain.

A Cumbrian school, which was closed after being damaged by this morning's storms, will reopen tomorrow.

Cockermouth School was closed to all students today following "severe storm damage".

Scottish Borders Council say there is a significant amount of standing water on the A68.

It was taken at midnight, from the A714.

Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service has been called to two house fires caused by lightning strikes.

One house caught fire in Penruddock during the morning's storms, and another in Dalston at around 8am.

The fire service say that the fires were put out quickly, but have damaged both buildings considerably.
