Heavy rain and thunder sweeps through Cumbria and south of Scotland

Cumbria, Dumfries and Galloway and the Scottish Borders are feeling the effects of the bad weather today, with a number of traffic disruptions.

The heatwave breaks with thunderstorms and weather warnings

Just hours after we enjoyed the hottest day of the year, thunder storms and heavy rain swept through Cumbria and southern Scotland.

A Met Office yellow weather warning is still in place and emergency services remain on standby.

Houses catch fire after lightning strikes

Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service has been called to two house fires caused by lightning strikes.

One house caught fire in Penruddock during the morning's storms, and another in Dalston at around 8am.

The fire service say that the fires were put out quickly, but have damaged both buildings considerably.
