Concern over Sanquhar Post Office

The current owners of the oldest post office in the world want to sell but if they can't find a buyer it will have to close.

"I think the people in Sanquhar are unilaterally in opposition to the post office moving they are very determine it should stay here it's something that they treasure, it's one of the flagships of the town of Sanquhar and it is significant for tourism in terms of Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland and indeed the UK as a whole."

"I mean it would be a disaster, where else would we go? The nearest one is, Kirkconnel. It's a lifeline to me because if I can't get my weekly money from there it means I've got to travel about 12 miles one way or 12 miles the other way. I think it would be a shame to lose it because children like to see a part of their heritage."

When the doors of the Sanquhar post office opened Queen Anne who was on the throne. That was 302 years ago and it is officially the world's oldest working Post Office. However, the owners now want to sell up, and if a buyer can't be found, the business will have to close.

"The best outcome would be the simple one that someone else would come and buy a viable business and continue to operate form this location here. If that wasn't possible then the Post Office, I believe, should explore the possibility of taking ownership or leasing the building, staffing it and using it as a mechanism to promote their business globally because it is a global business."
