The former MP for Workington has been given a peerage.

Sue Hayman is one of 36 people to be named on the honours list marking the Prime Minister’s first year in office.

Hayman announced the news on Twitter on Friday evening. She said: "It’s a great honour to be receiving a peerage but I will be going to the House of Lords to work. To be part of the Labour opposition holding this shambles of a govt to account - to continue to be a voice for the environment, animal welfare and for West Cumbria."

Ms Hayman served as a Member of Parliament for the west Cumbrian constituency from 2015 to 2019. She lost her seat to Conservative Party MP Mark Jenkinson in the December election.

It was the first time in decades the constituency turned blue with the Labour party winning every election since 1918 with the exception of a brief period in the 1970s.

Also included on the list is former leader of the Scottish Conservatives Ruth Davidson, former MP Ken Clarke, the Prime Minister's brother Jo Johnson, millionaire Evgeny Lebedev and cricketer Ian Botham.
