The mountaineer Sir Chris Bonington, is celebrating the 45th Anniversary of his summit of Mount Everest.

When his team climbed the notoriously difficult south-west face in 1975, it became the first British Team to reach the summit.

Members of that historic team founded the charity, Community Action Nepal, to support the mountain communities of the Himalayas.  It's been delivering healthcare and education for over 25 years.

The Everest Challenge 2020, will see Sir Chris Bonington ascend the stairs at his home in Cumbria, in full climbing kit, twenty times.

The greatest mountaineers across the generations are being invited to take part in the challenge and the Charity is asking people to join in and climb their stairs.

The total will be added together to see how far up Everest has been collectively climbed.  It's hoped the challenge will raise funds to support the most vulnerable people of Nepal during the Covid 19 pandemic.

Sir Chris said: "I'm incredibly excited to be celebrating the 45th anniversary of our groundbreaking achievement on Mt. Everest back in 1975.

"It was truly a team effort, in much the same way that Community Action Nepal are now inviting us all to come together to help improve the lives of the mountain people of Nepal."
