100 days of lockdown - 'Leaving just isn't worth the risk' say Noah Wall's family

Video report by Sam Parker

As lockdown restrictions start to ease for most of us there are some families who remain at home shielding to protect their loved ones.

For more than 100 days Noah Wall and his family have been inside their home. They haven't left for any reason, not even for a walk, as they are shielding to protect the eight-year-old.

Noah's parents Shelly and Rob were advised to abort him when scans revealed he had spina bifida and Hydrocephalus. But they were determined to have him. Doctors then told them he wouldn't live long, that with less than 2% brain function he couldn't survive.

But he has continued to defy the doctor's expectations and his brain is now almost fully functioning.

By shielding the family is taking no chances with his health and they have really enjoyed making the most of the family time they've had together.

Shelly said: "What better time has there been to spend time as a family and be altogether? We will never ever get this time back. We will never be able to do this again for such a long period of time.

"Shielding has meant that to protect Noah we are altogether at home and we have actually not left our home at any point. We've not been to the corner shop, we've not been shopping, we've not been for a walk. We have not been anywhere at all except the house and out garden for over 100 days.

"But we are never bored, we've grown everything you can imagine and spent hours playing. Noah was homeschooled anyway so his routine there hasn't been disrupted."

The family will have to venture outside for the first time later this month as Noah needs an operation at the RVI on his teeth after he fell out of his wheelchair before lockdown. It's now painful for him to eat so he has to have the operation.

Shelly added: "Noah needs to have the coronavirus test and then we will get the ok to go to the RVI and have a procedure done on his tooth and then come out that day. If things don't go to plan we will have to stay in overnight but Noah will need a test to have that done. We aren't looking forward to that bit."

The family don't plan to otherwise leave the house until there is a vaccine for the coronavirus. To them it just isn't worth the risk.

For many the thought of having to stay at home and not leaving at all would fill them with dread. But Noah and his family have made it work for them and created some wonderful memories to keep him safe.
