Firefighters help family of moorhen by filling up dried pond

Firefighters have come to the rescue of some moorhen in Cumbria by topping up their pond after hot weather dried it up.

The scorching temperatures over the last couple of weeks has meant the water levels are very low at Will Pool, in Lazonby.

Local residents and volunteers were concerned about a moorhen and her two chicks that were were 'living in a puddle' and approached the local fire station for their help.

On Wednesday, a crew paid a visit to the village pond and used their fire engine to fill the pool up, for the water-loving birds to enjoy, until rain arrives.

A spokesperson from the village thanked the firefighters and said: "The chicks are already swimming in their new found water."
